Senior Citizens of Westbury, Inc. (a/k/a The Westbury Senior Center or The Center), is a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization that has been serving older residents of Greater Westbury since 1956. The Center’s major sponsor is the Incorporated Village of Westbury, followed by support from the Town of North Hempstead, the Incorporated Village of Old Westbury, Nassau County, the State of New York and the Westbury School District.
At the Westbury Senior Center, we take great pride in the fine spirit that pervades our multicultural population. Members find companionship and friendship, and feel a strong sense of belonging, in a fun and happy environment. Our services promote healthy minds, bodies and attitudes as our members continue to learn and develop in new directions. Further, The Center team takes a personal interest in each member and offers emotional support in a caring and nurturing community.
The Center is an inclusive place and does not refuse membership to anyone over age 60, embracing all groups, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin or ancestry, sex, gender/gender expression, sexual orientation, religion/faith/creed, veteran status, military status or disability. The abilities of a 60+ year old do not preclude her/him from joining The Center. However, if an individual is unable to navigate on her/his own throughout the day at The Center, an aide, provided by the individual or individual’s family may be required. Low/moderate- and high-income seniors are all welcome. (Area residents aged 55 and over may take individual classes but may not join until reaching age 60+). The Center presently boasts more than 250 members, including individuals, couples and family members – and many groups of wonderful friends!
Our hours of operation are normally Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, January through June, and we are closed on Fridays in July and August. However, for pandemic safety reasons, we are currently operating at limited capacity, with our operational schedule evolving, since reopening on May 3, 2021. Please contact us or call 516-334-5886 for the most current information.
Our History
Senior Citizens of Westbury, Inc., (The Center), a 501 C-3 non-profit organization, is housed in the Village of Westbury Community Center, which is located at 360 Post Avenue, just off the Northern State Parkway at exit 32. The Center has been serving the needs of older residents of Greater Westbury since 1956. We eagerly invite and welcome seniors 60 years of age and older to join in our wide array of life enhancing activities.
Our large, bright and beautiful facility is an old house that is full of charm and character, with a newly refurbished “fireplace” and game playing room and a large addition that serves as a multipurpose room. The building is situated on a park-like, green campus, surrounded by gardens, and very much feels like home. Following the onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and thanks to grant funding provided by the State of New York and the generosity and efforts of The Village of Westbury, the building was partially renovated, and is looking wonderful and new! Adding to its appeal, we appointed our spacious community room with comfortable, new and smart-looking furniture that is easily cleaned and sanitized. To maintain safety and keep everyone engaged, we’ve added virtual programs and participation options, via Zoom... Whether it’s taking classes and participating in workshops, limbering up their bodies with some invigorating exercise, having lunch or snacks, doing artworks and crafts, playing cards and games or just chatting and joking with friends, the Center is the place members want to be, to come together and feel their best!
Senior Citizens of Westbury’s main sponsor is the Incorporated Village of Westbury, followed by support from the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, the State of New York, the Westbury School District, the Village of Old Westbury, and private fundraising. Because of generous support from sponsors, our members pay modest annual dues. Pricing varies by area of residence and number of family members belonging to The Center. Please contact us or call 516-334-5886 for current pricing.
Our Mission
Senior Citizens of Westbury, Inc. (The Center), proudly offers a wide array of programs and services designed to keep seniors’ minds and bodies active, alert and as well as possible. The Center strives to empower senior residents of Westbury, and surrounding communities, to live their best lives – socially, emotionally, and physically, with a focus on comprehensive wellness.
Please note, tours and intake for new members are by appointment only. Take classes at age 55 and join at 60+.
A Social Model Center: We are a social model center, meaning that we are not equipped to provide personal or medical assistance. Our members must be mostly self-sufficient and ambulatory, and if they require an aide, that is the responsibility of the member/family. We do have an adaptive program on Wednesdays for our more medically or cognitively challenged members. The group is called Special Friends and is led by our Homebound and Recreation Coordinator, who is amazing.
Hours of Operation, Daily Lunches: From September through June, we are open to members Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 3:30. In July and August, we are closed on Fridays. We are also closed all major and school holidays, and the week between Christmas and New Year. Every day we are open we offer a delicious, nutritious lunch, provided by a local caterer. The cost/suggested donation, as of now, is $3 per day. The meal includes an entree and dessert, milk, juice, coffee, and tea. Lunch is served every day at noon.
Regular Programming: We offer about 14 to 16 weekly classes, including yoga, meditation, tai chi, line dancing, crafts, painting, sculpture, various exercise classes, a book discussion group and more. These meet formally and require registration in advance and are part of our ACES Program (Adult Cultural and Educational Services) Some are at no additional cost to members, as they are sponsored by the County or local businesses. Others have a very modest fee (usually for materials/supplies). We usually have at least two or three health and wellness themed presentations and workshops each month, and we squeeze in some bingo whenever possible. At the start of flu season, we do a vaccination clinic, and we bring in local practitioners for various health screenings throughout the year.
Outside our Doors: We do activities outdoors when the weather is especially nice. We also host monthly food giveaways in spring, summer, and fall, and in summer and fall we hold numerous farmers' markets, with fresh, locally grown produce available for purchase. Prior to COVID the members went on day trips and outings. These have not resumed yet, but we are starting to have parties again, at local venues.
Cards and Games: In addition to the classes which fall under our ACES Program, our members enjoy playing different card and board games (Mahjong, Canasta, Bridge, 10 Pennies, etc.) every afternoon. They organize themselves into groups.
Large and Monthly Gatherings: On the first Wednesday of each month, we hold a general membership business meeting at 10:30 AM. We cover updates and finances and upcoming events, news, etc. at these meetings. On the last Wednesday of each month, we have "Celebration Day," beginning with lunch, followed by a sheet cake and ice cream, and entertainment. On Celebration Day we celebrate the members who have had a birthday, anniversary, or other happy occasion that month. Usually, a member or two will sponsor the cake. Large gatherings in the building may be limited to 50 to 60 people, or fewer, and we may require that masks be worn (at any time), out of an abundance of caution for disease spread prevention.
Transportation: Center Bus Service is available, only for residents of the Village of Westbury, on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, but some terms the Tuesdays are swapped out for Mondays, depending on which ACES classes are offered. We try to do grocery shopping trips on Thursdays, right after lunch, and non-residents can take advantage of those, because they leave from, and return to the Center, during Center hours.
Please don't hesitate to call or email us with questions.
